Okay, I came up with this blog last Fall and then seriously neglected it. Life was coming at me in all directions, so this was put to the wayside. However, I have been feeling the need for major self-expression lately, and lo and behold, I remembered this blog.
Music has always been an outlet for me- even though I don't sing(I REALLY CAN'T) or play music. I did grow up dancing tap, jazz and ballet and then hip hop in the late 80's into the 90's. I remember choreographing dances to my LP's in the middle of my living room, table pushed to the side. My favorite was a lyrical to Whitney's version of "The Greatest Love of All" that I performed at my elementary school talent show. LOL
I grew up around music. My dad began working at Motown as a young man, when it was just Hitsville U.S.A. He was there even through all the changes up until the early 90's, after Universal/MCA bought them out entirely. He was in charge of the music library back then. My godfather was one of the most prolific songwriters for 60's R&B music. He was like the LA Reid of his time. So you can imagine my view of soul and R&B music is pretty vast, and comes with a lot of personal anecdotes.
I guess because I was privy to the inside of that world, I can't live without music. I feel like I would die if I couldn't hear it anymore. I'm really not being dramatic at all. It's in my blood, especially when I see people dancing to it. Shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" get me so hyped! I love cheesy movies like "You Got Served" because of the sick choreography. Anything showcasing hip hop music and crazy, awesome dancing is what I love to see.
Music moves my soul. I can be in church and hear a beautiful, soulful, passionate voice and start crying buckets. My favorite female vocalists are Mary, Mariah, Whitney, Lauren, Jill and Christina A, and I think they ALL should sing gospel. Do you know how many people they could show God's love to just through their voices? JMHO I will always equate my most beautiful, romantic memories to a particular song. All my friends know why I love Stevie...LOL
So that brings me to answering my original question- What is this blog about? It's about MUSIC and how it makes me feel, how it influenced my life, how it influences the world, how it helps us love, cry, have fun, get freaky with our boo, dance, get angry and CHANGE THINGS.
